Types of Dishwasher

When it comes to buying a dishwasher, whether it’s because you’re moving to a new house, doing up your kitchen or because your old machine has finally given up, you’re bound to be asking yourself “which dishwasher should I buy?” Well, there are two types to choose from:

What is a freestanding dishwasher?

A freestanding dishwasher is a standalone appliance used for washing dishes. Unlike built-in models that are designed to be installed under a kitchen counter and integrated with the kitchen carpentry, freestanding dishwashers are independent units that can be placed anywhere in the kitchen where there is access to plumbing and electrical connections. They typically have finished sides and a top, allowing them to stand alone without needing to be enclosed. Freestanding dishwashers come in various sizes and configurations to suit different kitchen layouts and needs.

What is an integrated dishwasher?

An integrated dishwasher, also known as a built-in dishwasher, is a type of dishwasher that is designed to be installed directly into kitchen cabinetry. Unlike freestanding dishwashers, integrated models are built to fit seamlessly into your kitchen design, with a front panel that matches the surrounding cabinetry. This allows them to blend in with the rest of the kitchen for a cohesive look. Integrated dishwashers typically have controls located on the top edge of the door, hidden from view when the dishwasher is closed. They offer a sleek and streamlined appearance while still providing all the functionality of a standard dishwasher.

What is a semi-integrated dishwasher?

A semi-integrated dishwasher combines features of both freestanding and fully integrated dishwashers. In a semi-integrated dishwasher, the control panel is typically located on the top of the door, like in freestanding models, but the front panel is designed to accept a custom panel to match the surrounding cabinetry, similar to fully integrated models.

This design allows the dishwasher to have a more seamless appearance in the kitchen compared to freestanding models, but without completely hiding the control panel. Semi-integrated dishwashers are a popular choice for those who want a balance between functionality and aesthetics, offering a sleek look while still providing easy access to the controls.

Will it fit?

How to measure for a new dishwasher

Before you start your search, it’s really important to measure the area you want your dishwasher to go. This’ll help you narrow down your options and make sure you don’t get your heart set on a model that just won’t fit!.

Grab your tape measure and record the height, width and depth of your space. Now subtract 5cm from the width and 15cm from the depth. This will allow enough of a gap for your machine to be properly ventilated – giving you your ideal dishwasher measurements. Oh, and don’t forget to check you’ve got enough room to open your machine door to load and unload your washing.

Compact or slimline dishwashers are ideal for small kitchens or households with limited space. They typically have a smaller capacity but can still accommodate a reasonable amount of dishes. Full-size dishwashers offer more capacity and flexibility but require more space for installation.

Standard dishwasher measurements are roughly 84-85cm high, 59.5-60cm wide and 50-60cm deep. But things do vary between models, so, always double-check the product specs.

Choosing the right size

Be sure to measure your kitchen space before you choose a dishwasher. Standard dishwashers are 60cm wide, with slimline options of 45cm. A slimline option is perfect for a small family or an apartment setting where your kitchen space is limited. It can fit 9-10 table place settings but it can be difficult to load larger pots and pans. A 60cm model can fit 12 or 13 tables place settings. So, if for busier homes with lots of cooking and  baking a larger unit may be useful if you want to use the dishwasher to clean all your utensils in addition to the everyday dishes.

Some things to consider

These are the standard features to look for in a dishwasher, no matter what type you’re getting or budget you have. So if you’re weighing things up between two particular models, be sure to compare these dishwasher features when making your final decision!

Energy rating

The dishwasher energy rating system runs from A-G, with A being the highest energy efficiency rating and G being the lowest. And the more energy efficient your dishwasher, the less power it uses. Good for the planet and for cutting your energy bills!

Home Connect

WIth some dishwashers, you can monitor with Home Connect from wherever you are, whenever you need it. This way you don’t have to check it several times just to see if it’s running or not. And if the dishes are clean and dry, the Home Connect App sends you a push notification.

EcoSilence

Dishwashing like you’ve never heard before. Keeping your house clean can be difficult. Keeping it quiet can sometimes feel impossible. You might want to consider the noise level your dishwasher. Consider Ecosilence Drive from Bosch - delivering high-performance cleaning with very little noise. Equipped with a brushless, energy-saving motor that optimally reduces friction, the EcoSilence Drive ensures a much smoother, quieter operation.

Extra features

Dosage Assist

Sometimes the simple solutions are the best. Bosch DosageAssist catched your dishwasher tablet and ensures it disolves properly so your clean plates aren't left with a detergent residue.

6th Sense

No prewash required.
6th SENSE technology with Whirlpool provides perfect washing results with no pre-washing, soaking or scrubbing by hand, while effectively reducing water consumption and costs.

Quick wash

Need that gym kit washed fast? Look for washing machines with a quick wash cycle. A quick cycle washing machine can freshen up a small load in as little as 15 minutes- great for last-minute surprises or clothes you use all the time.

Quiet performance

No-one wants a racket while they’re washing their things - especially if you’re WFH! If you want a quiet washing machine, check its average noise level in decibels (dB). While you’ll never get a totally silent washing machine, anything below 50dB is considered particularly quiet.

Auto-dosing

With an auto-dosing washing machine, you fill up a special detergent compartment ahead of time. Then when it’s time to do your wash, it automatically adds just the right amount of detergent by correctly weighing your washing.

Enhanced cleaning

Spilling wine, coffee or anything else doesn’t have to be the end of your favourite outfit. Many machines now come with special enhanced cleaning or stain removal programmes. Some use steam to tackle the problem while others adjust the soaking time, temperature or drum action to remove stains

Sensor guided wash

Get rid of the guesswork! These washing machines have built-in sensors that automatically adjust the water, heat and spin speed amount depending on your laundry load. Plus, since you’re never using more energy or water than you need, it can help with the bills too.

Add to the wash

Everyone knows that feeling – you’ve put the wash on only to find you’ve missed a sock. A ‘pause cycle’ button or washing machine add-wash function lets you chuck those forgotten bits into the wash mid-cycle. So there’s no need to wait until your next laundry day.

Self-cleaning

To keep your washing machine working at its best, it’s a good idea to give the drum a clean every now and then. That’s why some machines have a self-cleaning cycle to remove softener, detergent and dirt build-ups in the drum.

FAQ

How do I load my dishwasher properly?

Load larger items like pots and pans on the bottom rack, placing them facing down. Smaller items like cups, glasses, and bowls should go on the top rack, facing down as well. Make sure to leave space between items for water and detergent to circulate effectively.

Can I put all types of dishes in the dishwasher?

Most dishes, glasses, cups, and utensils can safely go in the dishwasher. However, delicate items like crystal or wooden utensils may need to be washed by hand. Always check the manufacturer's instructions for specific guidance.

Do I need to rinse dishes before loading them into the dishwasher?

It's generally recommended to scrape off excess food but not necessary to pre-rinse dishes. Modern dishwashers are designed to handle food residue. However, heavily soiled dishes might require a pre-rinse or soak.

What type of detergent should I use?

Most dishwashers work well with dishwasher detergent tablets, powder, or liquid. Some models may require specific types of detergent, so refer to your dishwasher's manual for recommendations.

How often should I clean my dishwasher?

It's a good idea to clean your dishwasher once a month to prevent buildup of food particles, grease, and soap scum. You can do this by running an empty cycle with a dishwasher cleaner or by manually cleaning the spray arms, filter, and seals.

How long does a dishwasher cycle take?

Dishwasher cycle times can vary depending on the model and the selected wash cycle. Normal cycles usually take around 2-4 hours, while quick wash or eco cycles may take around 1-2 hours. Some dishwashers also offer express cycles that can clean dishes in as little as 30 minutes.

Which washing machine is best for me?

Choosing the best dishwasher depends on your specific needs, preferences, and budget. Here are some factors to consider when selecting a dishwasher:Size and Capacity: Consider the size of your household and the amount of dishes you typically wash. If you have a large family or frequently entertain guests, you might need a dishwasher with a larger capacity.

  • Budget: Dishwashers come in a wide range of prices, so determine how much you're willing to spend. Keep in mind that higher-priced models often come with more features and advanced technology.
  • Features: Think about which features are important to you. Some common features include adjustable racks, customizable wash cycles, soil sensors, delayed start options, and energy-saving modes.
  • Energy Efficiency: Look for dishwashers with high Energy Star ratings, as they consume less water and electricity, saving you money on utility bills in the long run.
  • Noise Level: If you're sensitive to noise or your kitchen is close to living areas, consider a dishwasher with a low decibel rating for quieter operation.
  • Brand Reputation and Warranty: Research reputable dishwasher brands known for their reliability and customer service. Check the warranty terms to ensure you're covered in case of any issues.
  • Installation Requirements: Consider whether you need a built-in, slimline or freestanding dishwasher based on your kitchen layout and space availability.
